Errigal Mountain has been named Ireland’s best sunrise or sunset hike by Lonely Planet, one of the world’s biggest travel publications.
Donegal’s highest mountain is a top draw for sunset and sunrise chasers.
And the new pathway has made it even better for hikers to get the timing just right.
Lonely Planet this week published a list of Ireland’s 12 best hikes and walks, with Errigal placed at number four.
The 751m mountain is Donegal’s tallest peak which rewards climbers with incredible views across the landscape.
Lonely Planet author Killian Andersen wrote: “The best views in Donegal have just gotten even better. A new trail and stairs have been added to this beautiful mountain to make it that bit easier to reach the summit.
“If you’re looking to catch a sunrise or sunset then Errigal is the hike for you. The 360 degree views of Donegal guarantee the perfect vantage point to watch the sun appear or disappear. If you’re lucky, you might even get above the clouds and see a cloud inversion. The best time to catch one of these is during autumn or winter.”
If you are hiking before or after daylight, the advice from Donegal Mountain Rescue is: “No matter where you go on your hike, always be aware of the route you are taking so that you can reduce the risk of taking the wrong path or a route that isn’t safe. Always carry a torch/headtorch and, as always, make sure you have the correct clothing for your hike, as well as plenty of food and water and a fully charged mobile phone.
“If you are going to be walking late into the evening, it is good practice to alert your local Garda Station and/or your local mountain rescue so as they are aware of your movements.”
