The spectacular ‘Light the Night’ charity car and tractor run has raised almost €12,500 for two worthy charities.
The Mid West Donegal Vintage Club, in association with the Melly family of Killybegs, ran the event on December 30 in memory of the late Conal Melly.
“As there has still been a few pounds coming in, we kept the fund open for a few weeks since our Light the Night run after Christmas for the Creeslough Tragedy and the Renal Unit at Letterkenny General Hospital,” a spokesperson for the club said.
“We decided it was time to finish it up and get a tally done which has come to an overwhelming €12,413. Sincere thanks to everyone who donated to these worthy causes and to anyone who helped in any way to make this possible. Once all cheques are cleared and we’re good to go, we will hand over the money so it goes to good use without delay.”
Conal Melly lived in Killybegs but was so proud of his hometown of Ardara, so the run travelled from Killybegs to Ardara.
Conal was an ambulance driver for 29 years. He was well-known and respected by everyone who knew him.
He also was a mechanic with a love for vintage cars. Conal passed away on 15th May 2021 surrounded by his loving wife Mary, and daughters Dareena and Arlene.
Conal’s daughter Arlene attends dialysis at LUH and wanted to give something back in appreciation of the amazing Renal Unit.
