An exciting new locally-written drama will premiere at the Balor Theatre in Ballybofey tonight.
Darkness Echoing is a play written by Butt Drama Circle member Shaun Byrne that will be performed at the intimate venue tonight and tomorrow night (Thursday).
Last year, Byrne wrote and starred in the Bloody Sunday play, ‘An Incident with Dave Cotter’, which was placed very highly at the All Ireland Drama Festival finals.
Set in present day Donegal – in Ballybofey itself – Darkness Echoing unfolds over a few weeks as newly returned don, Joe, tries to reconnect with his ailing father John, aided by home-help worker, Marie.
“It’s a family drama at heart” says Castlefin woman, Mairead McMenamin, who plays Marie and who is making her Balor debut after years of performing further downstream with The Castlefin Players.
” Our sympathies shift between all three characters as they slowly reveal their flaws and fears.”
JC Bonar, who plays Joe the father, added ” It’s been a real treat working alongside Mairead, we’ve been trying to get her to join us up here for years now so we’re just delighted she’s made the move. She’s a very natural performer on stage and audiences will immediately warm to her.”
Writer and director, Shaun Byrne, who also plays the troubled son Joe, praised the dedication of both actors.
“We started back in November on this project and a lot of time and effort has been put into piecing together these people’s lives to make them as true to audiences as possible,” he said.
Darkness Echoing will be performed at the Balor tonight and tomorrow night before it goes on tour as part of the All Ireland Drama circuit.
