Atlantic Technological University (ATU) has awarded a total of 20 Sports Scholarships at an event on campus on Thursday last.
This included seventeen 1st Year New Entrant Sports Scholarships, one ATU Donegal/GPA Postgraduate Scholarship and two International Basketball Scholarships.
ATU Donegal Head of Sport Michael Murphy was delighted to award the scholarships today: “Our ATU New Entrant Sports Scholarship programme continues to support students on their journey to academic and sporting excellence.
“In the current academic year 55 New Entrant Sports Scholarships have been awarded to students including the seventeen 1st Year New Entrant Scholarships which we recognise and welcome here today. We are excited by the big steps that sport at ATU Donegal continues to make, and we are motivated to further progress these developments in the future.”
The scholars recognised at this event today have represented ATU in the competitive arena and/or have excelled externally in their chosen sport.
Paul Hannigan, ATU Donegal, Head of College was delighted to recognise the contributions of these scholars: “The scholarships awarded today show the dedication to both sport and education that these individuals have.
“They are role models to our community and we celebrate their successes here today. I would also like to recognise the role model that Michael Murphy is to our students and community and wish him the best on his recent retirement from the Donegal team. We are delighted to have Michael as our Head of Sport at ATU Donegal”.
Dr Michele Glacken, VP for Students, Teaching and Learning was impressed by the diverse range of programmes that these students were undertaking.
“Scholarships are being awarded to students studying on a range of programmes from veterinary nursing to accountancy, including ATU Donegal’s unique programme – Athletic Therapy and Exercise Rehabilitation. As a consequence, the attributes of teamwork, leadership and commitment embodied by the scholars will be role modelled across the student body.
“ATU recognise the value of sport to students wellbeing and academic performance are delighted to be launching a new scholarship programme this year which will provide even more opportunities for intending students to avail of a scholarship to support their wellbeing, learning and sporting life.”
Oisin Toye (Finn Valley AC), was awarded a Scholarship for his participation in Athletics. Liam Dowling was recognised for his achievements in Basketball playing for both the NW academy and representing the campus.

Rehabilitation course at ATU Donegal. Oisin is an exciting young athlete and has
competed for Finn Valley AC in the 800m, 1500m & cross-country events. He has
recently represented Northern Ireland and Ulster in the win the 2022 Home

Mr Paul Hannigan Head of College, Atlantic Technological University, Donegal and Dr Michele Glacken is the VP Academic Affairs and Registrar of ATU present Liam Dowling with his sports scholarship award at a special presentation held in the ATU Donegal .Liam is a 1st year student undertaking a BEng (Hons) in Biomedical Engineering at
ATU Donegal. He is a member of the ATU Donegal Men’s Basketball team where
he plays as a small forward. He has already imbedded himself as a key member of
the college side in addition to the Northwest Basketball National League side. In
2019, Liam was part of U16 NW academy that won Mare Nostrum competition in

the Finn Harps Football Club Senior Squad. Nathan was a member of the
victorious St. Eunan’s College U19 side who won the U19 Dr Tony O’Neill All

Donegal. He has developed into a pivotal member between the posts as the ATU
Donegal Soccer team goalkeeper. He is currently playing for Dergview FC who are
competing in the Championship Division of the Northern Ireland Football League.
Patrick has previously represented the Republic of Ireland at Under 15 and Under

He has featured throughout the ATU Men’s Soccer campaign, playing centre
midfield or centre half. Ryan is also a member of the Finn Harps Football Club U19

Ladies Gaelic Football team who recently won the Higher Education LGFA Division
3 League title. Her energy in the half back was evident throughout the campaign.

Donegal. She has been one of the dominate scorers for the ATU Donegal Ladies
Gaelic Football side this year that won the Higher Education LGFA Division 3
League title. She has been given driving displays in variety of roles for the side.
Eimear plays for Donaghmoyne LGFA and recently contested the All-Ireland
Senior Ladies Club Final in Croke Park. She also is a member of the Culloville

Men’s Fresher Gaelic Football Scholarships were awarded to Luke McGlynn (Glenfinn GAA), Oisin Caulfield (C.L.G Na Rossa) and Cian Mulligan (Sean Mac Cumhallis GAA Club), for their contribution to their respective teams and college team. Luke has been named as captain for the Men’s Fresher team.

Blake McGarvey was congratulated for his commitment to senior men’s Gaelic football as a versatile member of the ATU Donegal Senior Men’s Gaelic team and has represented Donegal at all underage levels.
Peter Kelly and Thomas Crossan, and Conor Diver were awarded for their outstanding contributions to Hurling at both county and college level.

A postgraduate scholarship was awarded to Ryan Hilferty who has been ever present on the ATU Hurling team for the past five years and plays for both St. Eunans and Donegal teams.

Donegal/GPA Postgraduate Scholar. A recent graduate of ATU Donegal, Ryan has
been an ever present on the ATU Hurling team for the past 5 years. He is the
current captain of the side for the 2022/23 season and has displayed commitment
and a relentless determination for the side throughout the campaign to date. Ryan
also plays for his club St. Eunan’s GAA and is a member of the Donegal GAA

Two International Basketball scholarships were awarded to Johnny Fierstein from Maryland USA and Ignacio Folgueiras from Malaga, Spain for their participation to ATU’s basketball team and NW Basketball National league side.

Maryland USA. He is a natural leader who contributes across the board for the
team with his scoring, passing, and rebounding. A vocal leader who has the ability
to improve his teammates with his playing style. He leads the ATU Donegal Men’s
Basketball side for assists and is second in points and rebounds. Johnny also lays

Donegal and comes from Malaga, Spain. He plays as a power forward and is an
all-round supremely skilled player. He is phenomenal passer and has the ability to
score from any part of the court. Ignacio is the leading scorer and rebounder on
both the ATU Donegal Men’s Basketball and Northwest Basketball National
