Tributes have been pouring in following the death of well known Letterkenny organist Derek Fleming.
Mr Fleming passed away on Monday at Donegal Hospice following a short illness.
A gifted musician, Mr Fleming could be found playing the organ at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Letterkenny for many years.
The Letterkenny Cathedral Quarter said the group was ‘very saddened’ at his passing, saying “Derek played the Church organ at Trinity Presbyterian Church on the Main Street but also facilitated the Letterkenny Carol Trail every Christmas playing the organ at all the participating churches.”
Wells Kennedy, one of Irelands leading and longest established Organ building firms, also paid tribute.
“Derek was overjoyed when we rebuilt the organ in the church and was always keen to see how things were being constructed throughout the process,” a spokesperson said.
“Derek was a keen organ follower who would always be since in attendance at the various recitals taking place around the North West.
“Derek was always interested in talking about organs and organ music and was an encouragement to us as a company and also to the various organists around the North West Area.”
Derek of Gortlee, Letterkenny, is predeceased by his parents Samuel and Evelyn, sadly missed by his loving sister Edna Smith and husband Ian (“Wyndquest”, Poles, Cavan), brother Kenneth and wife Marie (Creeslough), nephews Glen, Ryan, Dean and niece Helena, relatives and friends.
There will be no wake. House Strictly Private at the request of the deceased.
Derek’s Service of Thanksgiving will take place in Trinity Presbyterian Church, Main St., Letterkenny on Wednesday 18th January at 1.30pm which can be viewed on the following link https://www.facebook.com/TrinityPresbyterianChurchLetterkenny/ followed by burial in the family plot at Gortlee Cemetery.
