There have been calls for a wildlife pond to be installed at Ballymacool Park in Letterkenny.
The pond, proposed by Councillor Gerry McMonagle, would enhance empty green space in the park.
Cllr McMonagle told the Letterkenny-Milford MD today that a pond would be a nice attraction for families and schoolchildren to learn about wildlife. The pond would also help preserve local flora and fauna in the area in line with climate strategies, he said.
He said the pond could be situated in the centre of the large park, which is well-used by the local community.
“There is a massive green area that comes to a plateau, I think it’s a waste of space, to be honest, it’s just green grass,” Cllr McMonagle told today’s meeting.
“I think a pond would enhance the park, increase its appeal and also improve the environment,” he added.
Cllr McMonagle’s motion today called for a feasibility study to be carried out on the feature. The council agreed to carry out an initial assessment which will examine suitable locations, consider possible sources of natural water and safety concerns. Following this, the council may progress to seek funding opportunities.
