Damien English has resigned as Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment.
Mr English’s sudden decision was prompted by revelations surrounding a planning application he made 14 years ago.
Yesterday, The Ditch reported that Mr English had not declared the ownership of a dwelling on a planning application to Meath County Council.
The law requires that anyone wishing to apply to build a one-off home must declare that they do not already own a home or owned a home in the past in which they have resided.
On Monday, The Ditch also revealed that Mr English failed to declare the property in the Dáil register for more than decade.
Mr English previously served as the junior housing minister from 2017-2020.
The Fine Gael TD said that, with hindsight, it was wrong not to declare ownership of his property.
“This was wrong, not up to the standard required and I apologise for doing so,” he said.
“I would like to thank the people of Meath West for their ongoing support as their TD. I will continue to serve them and work hard on their behalf in the constituency.”
Mr English posted a video statement on social media today announcing his resignation.
