A man has been killed after a car struck a stray horse in Co Monaghan.
The man, who was in his 40s, was a passenger in the car which hit the horse on the N2 around 9.20pm at Creevy near Carrickmacross.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene and the two other occupants in the car were assessed at the scene by Emergency Services personnel, but did not require hospital treatment.
The horse also died on impact.
The N2 at the crash site remains closed and Garda Forensic Collision Investigators will examine the scene this morning. Local traffic diversions are in place.
The man’s body has been removed to the mortuary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to come forward. They are also appealing to those with camera footage (including dashcam) from the area at the time, to make it available to them.
