Motorists advised to expect delays during Pte Rooney funeral

Gardaí are advising motorists to avoid the Newtowncunningham area on Thursday afternoon during the funeral of Private Seán Rooney.

The removal of the 23-year-old’s remains will take place at the Holy Family Church in Dundalk at 8.30am, followed by a burial service in All Saints Catholic Church Colehill, at 3.30pm the same day.

He will be buried with full military honours.

Garda Sean Sweeney said the remains are expected to arrive in Newton sometime between 1pm and 2pm.

The chapel car park will be closed to the public and the remains will be carried from Kernan’s to the chapel, along the main road. A 12 gun salute will take place in the field opposite the chapel.

“Motorists are advised to avoid this route, if possible, around this time and to expect delays. Garda traffic management will be in place,” Garda Sweeney said.
