Brendan McDyer was honoured to win the Gradam Shéamuis Mhic Géidigh award for his performances for Naomh Conaill in 2022.
Naomh Conaill beat St Eunan’s by one point in this year’s Championship Final in October, and McDyer gave a brilliant performance, scoring three points in the match.
“It’s an honour to get it to be honest, I just want to thank Raidio na Gaeltachta and the Mhic Géidigh family. It a lovely award and recognition.
“It’s great for them to keep his memory alive and it’s a lovely commemoration for him and an added bonus at the end of the year (for me).”
After a disappointing defeat to St. Eunan’s in the 2021 Donegal SFC final, the Glenties men got their revenge this year and despite getting knocked out of the first round of the Ulster Championship, McDyer said winning the Dr. Maguire back was their main target.
“We’ve been on the receiving end of losing finals and it’s difficult to take but for us this year it was a great motivator to right a few wrongs from 2021.
“We played really well that day but in fairness to Cargin they kept coming back and they’re renowned for that and they punished us that day. But the number one target for us was getting the Dr. Maguire back and anything else would be a bonus.”
McDyer made his Senior Championship debut in 2005, the same year in which Naomh Conaill won their first Senior Championship title, and he has remained a vital member of the team in the seventeen years since.
And at 35, he has no signs of stopping yet, complimenting the team as to one of the reasons he has kept going: “The hunger and desire and love of the game and club. It’s a great place to be involved in and there’s a great bunch of players.”
