A north Donegal GAA club and an island school have both received major awards at a ceremony in Croke Park.

Gairmscoil Mhic Diarmada, Arranmore, and Milford GAA were presented with eTwinning National Quality Label and European Language Label Awards at The Gathering last week.

The special event was hosted by Léargas, the Irish agency that promotes and manages European exchange programmes.

Gairmscoil Mhic Diarmada was presented with an award for their O.C.E.A.N project.

The initiative brought together 3rd and 4th-year students from Irish, Spanish, Italian and French schools.

Students worked together to research areas such as air and water quality studies, coastal erosion, climate change, citizenship and languages.

Milford GAA club received an award for their community-based project that combated loneliness among 30 to 80-year-olds who wanted to improve their Irish language skills.

Participants met weekly on Zoom and learned Irish through conversation circles and presentations.

The award was accepted by Dympna Barrett (main pic).

The Gathering marked 35 years of Erasmus+ in Ireland and recognised funded projects for excellence in teaching and innovation over the past year.

The Léargas Innovative Learning Awards recognises the positive impact of organisations and teachers at the forefront of learning, with awards including:

  • European Innovative Teaching Awards which showcase outstanding teaching practices carried out as part of Erasmus+ projects.
  • The eTwinning National Quality Label which provides recognition for teachers and students who have demonstrated inventiveness in teaching and learning, whether in the area of languages, of innovation, or of digital transition.
  • The European Language Label which highlights and awards innovative projects in the field of language learning, teaching and promotion across all sectors of education.
