Milford GAA Club is delighted to announce that the club has been awarded the European Language Label 2022 for its project ‘Ag treabhadh an ghoirt ar son na Gaeilge’. This is the second national award awarded to the club for its efforts in promoting the Irish language and culture in recent months.
As part of Milford GAA Club’s Irish language and culture programme, a weekly online class for adults started in March 2021, in the middle of the pandemic. These classes were open to those who wished to improve their knowledge of the Irish language and to engage socially with others during a challenging time due to Covid-19 restrictions.
The success of these classes is attributed to the very committed students who attended the classes via the video-conferencing platform Zoom. The age of participants ranged from 18 to 86. Classes comprised language-learning, cultural awareness, local history, poetry, live music and craic maith. The slot for a guest each week was a reminder of the richness of local expertise and knowledge on various topics.
Milford GAA Club’s Irish-language project satisfied the following four priorities in order to be selected as deserving winners
- Enhance language learning through Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and digital media
- Language learning and promotion of equity, social cohesion and active citizenship
- Professional development of language teachers
- supporting the teaching and learning of Irish.
The European Language Label 2022 is managed by the national agency Léargas, under the remit of the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science. The Club Executive Committee congratulates everyone involved in bringing further prestige and honour to the Club. The Award Ceremony takes place on the 10th November 2022 in the Croke Park Conference Centre.
