John McElhill won the Run Galway Bay Marathon in his first ever 42km race.
The Finn Valley AC man finished in a time of 2:36:38, just two seconds ahead of Peter Burns in second as a sprint finish was all that ended up separating the two athletes.
A usual winner at the 5km races in the county, it was a first attempt at the gruelling 42km race in Galway, and he finished in style to win.
