Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Donegal T.D., Charlie McConalogue, confirmed that he has approved a request from Donegal County Council for an additional €4.6m to complete the Greencastle Breakwater project.
This brings the total investment approved by the Minister for the project to over €13m.
The long-awaited Greencastle Breakwater project was approved in May 2021. Funding of €8.9m was initially announced by the Minister under the first tranche of the Brexit Adjustment Local Authority Marine Infrastructure Scheme 2022 – 2023 for the project in April 2022.
Donegal County Council completed a tender competition for the project and following this applied for additional funding for the project under the second tranche of the scheme. The Minister confirmed approval for this funding request. The closing date for applications for the second tranche of the scheme is 30th September 2022. The Scheme funds publicly owned marine infrastructure and is being funded under the EU Brexit Adjustment Reserve (BAR).
Commenting, Minister McConalogue said: “The Greencastle Breakwater project is a game changer for the North West and will give a significant boost to Inishowen. It is tremendous that the project is progressing and I am delighted to support it”.
