Plans are underway to review car parking issues at Letterkenny University Hospital.
The Saolta Group is set to examine ways to free up spaces on the campus and to bring in schemes to encourage staff to take alternative transport to the hospital.
The LUH campus currently has 1,100 spaces. As of April 2022 there are almost 2,000 staff in various positions at the hospital.
“There is an ongoing issue with the lack of car park spaces for patients, visitors and staff at Letterkenny University Hospital,” Ann Cosgrove, Chief Operations Officer of Saolta acknowledged in a response to the Regional Health Forum West on Tuesday.
A review of existing car parking arrangements will involve consultations with all LUH staff on reinstating the short term car park for patients and visitors only.
Another measure to be considered is the removal of the named car park spaces and creating a dedicated reserved car park for nominated staff only.
The Saolta group is also set to consult with staff about encouraging and incentivising staff to use alternative transport methods to come to work ie carpooling, cycle to work, public transport etc.
“A period of staff consultation is now underway and the outcome of this process will influence the reconfiguration,” Ms Cosgrove said.
The matter was raised on Tuesday by Donegal County Councillor Ciaran Brogan.
