A local suicide prevention charity raised a whopping €14,300 during their August Bank Holiday fundraiser.
North West STOP invited Donegal people to greet the dawn in ‘Sunrise for STOP’ on Saturday July 30th, to support their free counselling services throughout the Northwest.
The Donegal event was at the Fr Tierney GAA grounds, Ballyshannon at 5.15am, while an early morning swim also took place in Letterkenny.
“North West STOP extends our thanks to everyone who organised, took part or donated to our Sunrise for STOP campaign,” a spokesperson for the charity said.
“The entire campaign raised over €14,300, ensuring mental health counselling provision for 45 people. Thank you to everyone who got behind our campaign to support this vital service.”
Dawn walks were organised by fantastic volunteers in Carrick on Shannon, Sligo, Drumshanbo, Glenfarne, Riverstown and Tubbercurry and another sea swim occurred in Sligo.
The charity provides free counselling throughout the northwest and surrounding areas, including Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal as well as Cavan, Roscommon, Longford and Mayo.
STOP Suicide was founded in 2004 by families who were bereaved by suicide.
It is a community, voluntary body that works to prevent suicide by informing, educating and promoting positive suicide prevention policies throughout the West and Northwest.
Their purpose is to provide a safe, confidential place where those who request assistance can talk about the loss, stress, confusion, conflicts and other pain in their lives.
The charity has a list of fully accredited counsellors whom they can call on to provide counselling on a no-fee basis.
This service is totally free to their clients and is funded primarily by voluntary donations and community fundraising events.
Their counselling number 086 777 2009 is manned from 8.00am to 9.00pm and they aim to put callers in touch with a counsellor within 24 hours.
