Malachy O’Rourke has ruled himself out of the running for the vacant Donegal senior football managerial post.
The Donegal News is reporting that the former Fermangh and Monaghan manager isn’t interested in succeeding Declan Bonner.
O’Rourke, who is currently in charge of Derry champions Watty Graham’s Glen, was the clear favourite for many GAA fans.
He managed the Farney men to provincial glory in both 2013 and 2015, against Donegal on both occasions.
As first reported by Donegal Daily two weeks ago, Martin McHugh has emerged as a possible contender to be the next manager.
It is understood he could be joined by Donegal Senior Ladies manager Maxi Curran and his own son Mark as part of a new team at the helm.
Curran was joined by Mark McHugh in the Donegal ladies set-up and McHugh senior is close to Curran.
However, cunning McHugh is keeping his cards very close to his chest.
The other name still linked to the post is that of Milford’s Shaun Paul Barrett – who has managed the Donegal minor and Under 20s in the past.
He led the Donegal minors to Ulster minor championship success in 2016, losing out narrowly to Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final in Croke Park.
The nominations for the high-profile post closed over a fortnight ago.
The three-person panel designated to find Bonner’s successor could yet decide to make their own moves outside of the nominations process.
