Last week, the 40th Recruit Platoon were inducted into the 28th Infantry Battalion at Finner Camp.
The 38 recruits are now embarking on their new careers in the Defence Forces.
With an average age of 21, the Platoon’s geographical spread includes men and women from Antrim, Armagh, Derry, Donegal, Down, Dublin, Fermanagh, Louth, Tyrone and Wicklow.
They also include recruits from Syria, Croatia, Ukraine, Malta and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
As a result, the platoon has a very wide linguistic range with fluency in Irish, English, Maltese, French, Ukrainian, Russian, Arabic and Croatian.
“In their first week, they began their induction training with a variety of foot drill lessons and PT,” a Defence Forces spokesperson said.
“This is designed to improve their group cohesion and their own personal military fitness and give them an introduction to the standards expected of a recruit during training.”
Eight members of the recruits Platoon also have family serving in the Defence Forces.
