Mona McSharry has qualified for the 100m breaststroke semi-finals at the European Aquatics Championships in Rome.
The Marlins Swimming Club, Ballyshannon graduate was the 5th fastest qualifier with a 1:07.30, having come third in her heat behind Italy’s Martina Carraro and Sweden’s Sophie Hansson.
Carraro and fellow compatriot Arianna Castiglioni both recorded times faster than McSharry, but due to a rule of no more than two people from the same country being allowed through, both failed to qualify as Benedetta Pilato and Lisa Angiolini were the two fastest in the heats.
The Grange, Co. Sligo native qualifies for the last 16 along with Niamh Coyle from Tallaght, who was the 11th fastest qualifier.
McSharry made the 100m breaststroke final at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, and capped off 2021 with a bronze in the same event at the World Short Course Swimming Championships in Abu Dhabi.
McSharry will go again tomorrow morning in the semi-final.
