A community in east Donegal has been left ‘bereft of words’ following the sudden death of a popular young father.

Darren Lafferty of Aisling Court, Ballybofey, and formerly Curragh, Killygordon, passed away after becoming unwell while on a trip to Newcastle, England, last weekend.

He was 43 years-of-age and leaves behind a grieving wife and two daughters aged just one and three.

The late Darren Lafferty.

Speaking at his requiem Mass this afternoon, Fr Patsy Arkinson PP told a packed St Patrick’s Church, Crossroads, that death came ‘like a thief in the night’ and took Darren away.

“Darren left us ever so swiftly. His death stunned not only his family, but also the entire community. Everyone is bereft of words,” he said.

The huge attendance, both inside and outside of the church, heard that he was a popular, yet modest, young man.

He was a talented painter and decorator, however, he had only recently qualified as an electrician.

Fr Arkinson told mourners that Darren and Mary were married in the same church and would have celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary next month.

He is survived by his wife Mary (née Mc Menamin) and daughters Dearbhla and Caoimhe.

Darren is also survived by his parents, Kathleen and Dessie Lafferty, brother of Brian and sisters Serena McLaughlin, Siobhan Houston and Lorraine Lafferty, parents-in-law, Seamus and Anne Mc Menamin and a wide circle of family and friends.

Donations in lieu, if desired, to Epilepsy Ireland c/o any family member or Charles Lynch, Funeral Director.
