Sean MacCumhaill’s began brightly and jinking corner forward Kevin McCormack beat five men before hitting a fine score after just a minute on the clock.
Sean MacCumhaill’s 2-16 V Milford 0-10
By Gerry McLaughlin
Full-forward Joel Bradley Walsh pointed a free to put the Twin Towns men two points clear after five minutes.
Milford, who badly missed the presence of Luke and Kane Barrett, whose father SP Barrett is in the Sean MacCumhaill’s backroom squad, replied from a placed ball from Marty Doyle.
Milford hit back with points from the impressive Dylan Dorrian and a Cathal McGettigan free.
But it took a superb save from MacCumhaill’s keeper Eoin Gallen who smothered Rory O’Donnell’s point black shot on the edge of the square.
However, it was MacCumhaills who looked the more enterprising side as McCormack placed the lively Jamie Keegan for a point.
McGettigan levelled for Milford but that was as close as they got for the rest of the half.
Bradley Walsh made up for an earlier miss with a fine point and Keegan made it 0-5 to 0-3 by the 20th minute as Milford hit three wides.
And then MacCumhaill’s struck for a deadly goal before the break when Bradley Walsh showed great patience and vision in picking out Stephen O’Reilly who finished to the net from close range.
The winners led by 1-8 to 0-6 at the break with Bradley Walsh and McGettigan having a battle of the boots.
It did not get any better for a weakened Milford after the break with the lively Stephen O’Reilly increasing their advantage with a well taken point.
And the losers could only score three more points in the second half from McGettigan.
In contrast, a vastly superior MacCumhaill’s were never bothered as the points flowed from Bradley Walsh.
And this match was well over when Kevin McCormack scrambled home a late goal when a shot from Carl Dunnion came off the Milford crossbar.
The winners doubled their scores and have quite a potent forward line which will be even more dangerous when Oisin Gallen returns.
