The Donegal Mountain Rescue Team (DMRT) has issued advice to campers following yesterday’s false alarm which sparked a major rescue effort.
Bystanders had contacted emergency services – concerned after discovering an abandoned tent along the coast near Glencolmcille.
As a result, the volunteer team was tasked by An Garda Síochána and Malin Head Coast Guard at 1:44 pm.
The Rescue 118 helicopter was also sent to the area.
An urgent appeal was issued to some local media for the owners of the tent to come forward.
At 2:39, the team was stood down as the owner had made contact with Gardai to confirm they were safe and well.
“If a tent is ever left unattended for any period of time, it is a good idea to leave a note with contact details and information on when you will return, so as not to alarm others,” a DMRT spokesperson said.
The same advice would also relate to those who leave vehicles unattended while they take to the hills, or go camping.
Bundoran RNLI, meanwhile, advised anyone leaving tents, boats, kayaks etc unattended on the coastline to ensure they are labelled with a contact number.
