Concerns have been expressed about the future of another one of the county’s top hotels.
Established in 1838, the popular 49-bedroom Nesbitt Arms is situated in the centre of the busy tourist town of Ardara and is a major employer there.
However, a public meeting in the town heard the establishment could, at least, partially close in order to accommodate Ukrainian refugees.
It had been put up for sale back in February, but has since been withdrawn from the market.
Staff were informed earlier this month that the first refugees will move in some time in August.
As a result of the news, a public meeting was held in the town two weeks ago to discuss the issue.
Donegal Daily understands those in attendance expressed concern that many jobs, and a local institution, would be lost.
It was also pointed out that the establishment is a big draw to the area and is host to many important local events such as weddings and dinner dances.
One of those who attended that meeting, and who did not wish to be named, said there was an air of ‘sadness’ amongst the attendees.
“We have been told that refugees are going in to it sometime in early August,” he said.
“However, it may not fully close, we just don’t know.
“The Highlands Hotel in Glenties and the Bay View in Killybegs are both working well, with refugees housed on one floor, and are still open to the public. So, that model might be used at Nesbitt’s too.”
Asked about the mood about the public meeting on the matter, he said it was not overly negative.
“Let’s be honest, nobody in rural Ireland wants to lose anything,” he explained.
“People said they were sad to lose it, but it must be tough for anyone running a hotel at the minute, and they need all help to keep them going.
“Maybe if they reinvest in the hotel when this (war) is all over, then that would be a positive for all the area.”
We contacted a spokesperson for the hotel for comment, however, no reply was received at the time of publication.
