The community of Malin and the wider Inishowen community are shocked and saddened following the sudden passing of John Byrne.
Mr Byrne was a respected Gael and a ‘pillar of the community’ who played an active role in many groups, clubs and in politics.
He was the dedicated club treasurer of Malin GAA and a beloved friend to many.
A tribute from the club described John as “someone with such devotion to our Club and the entire Community.” His fellow club members gathered in Malin town last night for his journey home from Collins Funeral Home, Culdaff, passing his beloved Connolly Park.
Other tributes to John remember him as a well-known Charolais breeder. “Our thoughts and prayers are with John’s wife Susan and the entire Byrne family and the wider community as they try to comfort each other during these sad times,” said the Donegal Charolais Breeders Club.
Inishowen County Councillor Martin McDermott also paid tribute to John as his good friend and election director since 2014. Cllr McDermott said John was “someone who has always been there for me when I needed advice no mater what time of day or night. John has been the pillar of the community in Malin for a long number of years and has been a stalwart for Malin GAA and has contributed immensely to our parish.”
