A special event will be held in Spain next September to mark the 420th anniversary of the death there of Red Hugh O’Donnell.
According to the organisers, the event in the city of Valladolid, promises to be one of the largest gatherings of people from around the world to commemorate the famous Donegal Chieftain.
Further details of the event will be announced later in the week.
Two years ago, the search for the remains of Red Hugh O’Donnell began in the Spanish city.
The city council is carrying out a final test to determine if there are more remains of the Chapel of Wonders in the inaccessible space under the Santander bank.
The Irish Chieftain died on September 10, 1602, in Simancas Castle aged 29, and was given a royal burial in the former chapel which has also housed the remains of Christopher Columbus.
Earlier this year, meanwhile, plans were being made to bring the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District and Valladolid closer together and promote a major tourism strategy.
The project is the brainchild of the Red Hugh Ó Donnell, Lifford Committee.
Committee member Mr Eddie Crawford, and Carlos Burgos, President of Hispano-Irish Association, addressed the Lifford-Stranorlar MD meeting.
“These (east Donegal and Valladolid) are the areas that our great Donegal Chieftain, Red Hugh Ó Donnell, took his first breath and sadly his last,” Mr Crawford told Donegal Daily.
Some of the main objectives of the Red Hugh Ó Donnell, Lifford Committee, are the preservation of Mongavlin Castle, St Johnston (main pic), the birthplace of the famous chieftain and the twinning of the areas around Lifford with Valladolid.
The committee also proposes to erect a statue of Red Hugh in the Diamond, Lifford.
