Almost 400 people have been waiting five years or more for a medical appointment at Letterkenny University Hospital, new figures have revealed.
Nationwide, more than 5,200 nationwide are waiting five years or more for their first outpatient appointment, with 397 of those waiting at LUH.
Some 900,000 people are currently on some form of hospital waiting list in Ireland.
Donegal GP Ciaran Ó Fearraigh told Newstalk FM that the delays are unreasonable.
“It just shows us what we on the ground as GPs see all the time – that people are waiting far in excess of what anybody would consider a reasonable period of time for necessary healthcare.”
“In the most extreme situations, people are waiting for outpatient care and maybe have a delayed diagnosis of a severe condition that wasn’t picked up because they were waiting so long,” said Dr Ó Fearraigh.
