John Kelly has created history as he set a new Irish record this evening at the Cork City Sports.
The Finn Valley AC man threw out to a National Record of 20.16m in the shot put at the World Athletics Continental Tour bronze meet.
The St Johnston native’s previous best was a 19.57m he threw last month but he went one better today to win the bronze medal.
The previous National Record was set by Eric Favors earlier this year, throwing 20.07m, beating Paul Quirke’s record held since 1992 of 20.04m.
Favors was fourth today, breaking his own record with a 20.11m throw, but Kelly bettered it today.
Italian Nick Ponzio won with a. 20.71 effort and American Andrew Liskowitz took silver, throwing 20.57m.
