Dunkineely/Bruckless/Killaghtee Community Notes
AGM
The Dunkineely Community Ltd. Annual General Meeting will take place on Wednesday the 13th of July at 7.30pm.
This year it will take place in the back room of MacLaughlin’s.
These are exciting times for DCL, with funding for conservation surveys on two of their most famous local heritage sites, and big plans for their 10th Anniversary.
All are welcome to come along and see what they are doing and what future plans they have.
The Litter that Killed a Litter
Ireland’s rarest native mammal, the Pine Marten, has been making a comeback in recent years, and a few of them have appeared in the area.
It is believed that they have contributed to the recovery of the Red Squirrel numbers by selectively predating the Grey Squirrels.
The Greys carry Squirrel Pox, to which they are immune, but which is deadly to the reds. The story appears to be, removal of the Greys has also removed the Squirrel Pox, so Red Squirrel numbers have recovered.
A female Pine Marten was killed on the road last Monday, outside Dunkineely.
It seems that it was attracted onto the road by a discarded take-away box that had the smell of food on it.
The Pine Marten was lactating, meaning her young are starving to death.
Nobody thinks that when they litter, it could result in a death of any creature, never mind and entire litter so please remember to take home your rubbish and litter.
Bruckless NS
With the school year ending, goodbyes were said to two young graduating students, Dónal and Adam.
Principal Deirdre is looking forward to welcoming current and new families back to the school in September.
“It is hard to believe we are at the end of the school year again. Since I started on the 28th of February, I couldn’t have felt more welcome,” she said.
The school is accepting any enrolments over the summer. If any parent would like to discuss what they can offer, feel free to e-mail them to arrange a call back chat at any stage at brucklessnationalschool@gmail.com. Find out the latest from their newsletter at brucklessns.ie.
