Mark English won his eighth national title today at the National Senior Track & Field Championships in Santry today.
The Finn Valley AC clubman crossed the line in 1:48.46, ahead of Kildare AC athlete John Fitzsimons who finished in 1:49.10.
The front two lead the way in the last 200m, pulling away from the rest of the pack, with Fitzsimons leading.
But English passed the Kildare AC athlete with 80 metres to go and was not to be caught.
Tír Chonaill AC won two medals in the same event as Kelly McGrory set a new personal best on her way to winning the 400m hurdles, with a time of 57:22 ahead of Nessa Millet of St. Abban’s. Lucy McGlynn was in third with a time of 1:00.00.
Fellow club mate Conall Mahon was the winner of the Men’s Triple Jump, leaping to 14.68, while Finn Valley’s Luke Gillespie was 4th with a best of 13:55.
Tír Chonaill AC picked up another medal as Siobhan Doherty was 2nd in the Women’s 5000m walk, finishing in 27:51.32.
Lifford-Strabane AC’s Gareth Crawford was second in the Men’s Javelin, throwing a best of 63.71, less than a metre off the winner Conor Cusack of Lake District AC, while Aaron Crawford was 4th, with a best of 56.23m.
Ellie McCurdy was 6th in the Women’s event with a best of 36.98, while Finn Valley’s Bridget McDyer came 6th in the weight for distance, throwing 6.12.
Meanwhile, Oisín Ó Gailin was 7th in the Men’s 1500m final, finishing in 4:02.08.
Tïr Chonaill’s Eoin Sharkey was 7th in the 400m hurdles final.
