A new app has launched this weekend to celebrate all that Buncrana has to offer.
The ‘Buncrana App’ by local tech company Glitterbug is the brainchild of Inishowen native Laura Cavanagh and her partner Colin Vaughan.
The app, available on iOS and Android, lists what’s happening in Buncrana as well as local services combined with in-app activities like walking tours, AR treasure hunts, games tournaments and more.
To celebrate the launch this weekend, the creators have added some extra touches for Pride Month.
“As it’s the first ever Inishowen Pride festival this weekend in Buncrana, we’ve also added something special for the occasion – augmented reality 3D models of local town landmarks with a rainbow coloured design. The 3D models will be a permanent feature in the app and will change over time. They will be coloured rainbow for the month of June.”
Laura explains that the goal of the app was to give a snapshot of the town for locals and visitors alike. “The idea is to make the town as accessible as possible for tourists so we can convince as many people as possible to visit Buncrana. It’s aimed at visitors but will be useful for everyone.”
There is a personal motivation in the project too, Laura says.
“The app is dedicated to my father who passed away ten years ago. I’ll be releasing it around the anniversary of his death. My father, Bernard Doherty was raised in Buncrana and he always loved the town. One of our favourite topics to talk about what ways to bring more tourists to Buncrana and how the town had so much to offer and how we could put a spotlight on it.”
