St. Columba’s Comprehensive Glenties said farewell to popular teacher Gerry Moore after 21 years in the school.
Mr. Moore was Transition Year co-ordinator in Glenties and has been a History teacher for his 35 year career in schools.
He taught in Dublin and all the way to The Bronx before moving to the Comprehensive school in Glenties at the turn of the millennium.
A lover of history, Mr. Moore was a leading figure in the ‘My Adopted Soldier’ project, helping students learn more about the Irish involvement in the Battle of the Somme in the First World War.
The project involved taking students over from his own school to the Somme battlefield region.
Having them ‘adopt’ a soldier, the students researched a soldier from Donegal who died in the Somme and on their trip, visited their graves.
Mr. Moore’s passion for the subject was passed on to so many students during his career and St. Columba’s Comprehensive Glenties have wished him all the very best in his retirement.
