Kilbaron National School, Ballyshannon was named regional winner in the primary school category at the Green-School Water Awards, hosted by An Taisce Green-Schools and Irish Water this week.
The students from the Donegal school were recognised for installing water devices, fixing water leaks and installing a water butt.
They also visited a local water treatment plant and encouraged all students and their families to become more aware by sharing “water saving tips” and undertaking a “Walk for Water”.
“They have shown great leadership, not just in their schools but also in their wider communities,” said Cathy Baxter, Green-Schools Manager at the awards ceremony.
Students from Kilbaron National School showed commitment to raising awareness of the value of water in their school and community by undertaking a water survey, conducting leak tests and conducting water usage in the school.
This is the ninth year of the Green-Schools partnership with Irish Water, and in that time over 1,600 schools have taken part, with 123,000 students from 551 schools participating this year.
