Fintan Doherty plays as Ireland u17s lose out to Finland

Fintan Doherty started in goal for the Republic of Ireland under-17s as they lost 3-2 to Finland in the Elite Round qualifier.

The Letterkenny native was on the bench for the sides 4-1 defeat to Portugal but got the nod to start yesterday over Sligo’s Conor Walsh at the Parque Desportivo Sant’Ana, Penalva Castelo in Portugal.

Ireland took an early lead through Franco Umeh and could have been 2-0 up in 20 minutes but Mark O’Mahoney missed a penalty.

Julio Freitas Von Hellens equalised for the Finns before the break but Umeh made it 2-1 shortly after half-time.

Two late goals in the 78th and 82nd minute from substitutes Lauri Laine and Yllson Lika saw Colin O’Brien’s side lose their second game of the

Ireland face Bulgaria at the Municipal Santa Comba Dao on Tuesday afternoon.
