A remarkable suite of new music by composer Vincent Kennedy, Colmcille, Dove of Peace, will have its world premiere performance at An Grianán Theatre on this Sunday afternoon, March 13th. at 3.00pm.
The work has been specially commissioned for Colmcille 1500 and has been inspired by significant happenings in the life of Donegal’s most famous saint.
Through titles such as The Birth Cloak, Doire Colmcille, Monks and Chieftains, Trasna go Dál Riada, Nessie and Colmcille and the Book of Kells, the new composition weaves its way through Colmcille’s eventful life, from noble beginnings at Gartan to the pinnacle of his monastic achievements on the island of Iona, reflecting on his life, legacy and popular folklore in equal measure.
Colmcille, Dove of Peace will be performed by the Donegal Youth Orchestra, Donegal Youth Choir, Guest Soloists and Narrator. The soloists are harpist and singer Nodlaig Brolly, soprano Sara Laughlin, tenor Aodhán Gavigan, uilleann piper Paul Gillespie, with Evan McGarrigle on piano. The narrator is Megan Armitage.
Vincent Kennedy, long-time conductor of the Donegal Youth Orchestra, is one of the country’s best-known composers. He has written for orchestral and chamber ensembles, symphonic and brass bands, and choral ensembles. His music has been performed by the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, the Band of An Garda Síochána and the Irish Army Band and a whole host of ensembles and soloists around the world.
Colmcille, Dove of Peace has been jointly commissioned by Donegal County Council and Donegal Music Education Partnership. The commission has been supported by Creative Ireland, Donegal Education and Training Board, The Arts Council and Donegal County Council.
