Large numbers of Donegal farmers will be paid up to €10,000 per year for measures to re-wet bogland in the next agri-environmental grant scheme.
Significant swathes of the county have been selected under the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) which will also include scrub control, the Farmers Journal is reporting.
A total of 20,000 farmers, mainly along the west of Ireland, are targeted under this part of the scheme and farmers in areas outlined will have to work together to carry out measures.
The average payment for the scheme is between €7,000 and €10,000 per annum for those who carry out the most environmentally ambitious actions.
Minister for Agriculture, Charlie McConalogue, said that payments under the scheme will operate under a ‘hybrid result-based’ model and that all farmers will have the necessary support and training to take part.
