Donegal recorded Ireland’s eighth highest Covid-19 incidence rate over Christmas, new data reveals.
A total of 2,537 new cases were detected in the county between St. Stephen’s Day and New Year’s Day. The 7-day incidence rate shot up to 1593.7 per 100,000 in that time. The incidence was half that figure (789.6) in the week before Christmas.
The median age of people who contracted the virus in Donegal in the final week of 2021 was 29.
In a fortnight, Donegal had jumped from 22nd place to 8th in the county table published by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.
Westmeath has emerged as the Covid-19 hotspot of Ireland, with a seven-day incidence rate of over 3000.
