The Irish Red Cross has been called to provide back-up to the HSE’s National Ambulance Service during the Covid-19 surge.
Volunteers will be carrying out patient transportation and transfers to ensure continuity of service in the acute hospital sector.
Teams were in action in Donegal and other counties over the weekend.
“Our voluntary staff are well-trained, highly qualified and ready to go,” said a statement from the Irish Red Cross.
“The Irish Red Cross is now providing ambulance assistance of the HSE in counties Dublin, Cork, Naas, Tipperary, Cavan, Limerick and Donegal and is coordinating with the Order of Malta and St John Ambulance to ensure as wide a coverage as possible. It is expected that this service could be extended to other counties in the week ahead.”
“The Irish Red Cross are delighted to be in this position of being able to assist the HSE’s National Ambulance Service and by extension to also be able to assist the Government in this challenging period.”
