A Donegal County Councillor is calling for more investment into regional water supplies.
Water is out in the Mountain Top area of Letterkenny today following a water main burst. Properties in Calhame and Curraghleas may be affected by the disruption, which is due to be repaired by 2.30pm.
Disruptions may occur in the Creeslough area early tomorrow morning (from midnight – 5am) as mains repair works get underway. The night-time works are being carried out by Irish Water as part of the National Leakage Reduction Programme. Over 1,054 metres of aged problematic water mains are being replaced to reduce bursts.
Cllr Micheal Cholm Mac Giolla Easpuig said: “There’s a huge issue with water infrastructure right around the whole county, what we need to do is get the state to invest properly into our water infrastructure.”
“Unfortunately prior governments have chosen not to invest properly in water, it is vital now that we invest into this.
“I believe that water needs to be come back into the full control of the council.”
Over €500 million has been invested into the National Leakage Reduction Programme between 2017 and the end of 2021 to reduce leakage and replace old pipes on the national water network.
