A creative Donegal grandad is wowing his family and neighbours with a homemade Christmas display.
Once again, Cahall McGee has turned his home at Colehill Newtowncunningham into a spectacular scene for all to enjoy.
The 77-year-old has been crafting Christmas displays for eight years now with the help of his wife Kathleen, and it gets bigger and better each December.
Cahall’s motivation is his grandchildren and he just loves to see their faces light up when they admire his creations.
Much of the display is homemade. He starts planning in September, and he visits every Christmas decoration shop that he can find in the run up to December.
He made Santa’s light-up sleigh all by hand. Inside the porch, the railway track, baubles and trinkets are brought from around the world and planned months in advance.
Cahall loves for people to stop and look at his work up-close. The special details of the display cannot be admired properly from the road, so families are welcome to come up to the window. Anyone enjoys their visit is invited to donate to the Irish Kidney Association online on behalf of the McGees: www.ika.ie
“Dad is just Christmas mad,” his family told Donegal Daily.
Cahall and Kathleen have seven grandchildren and, over the years, their festive showcase has become a true family effort.
“Everyone has to be there for the day the Christmas lights are going on.”
“Dad is all about the grandchildren and loves to see wee ones coming to look at it.
“It makes our Christmas too. On Christmas day we all wear our jumpers and we love the atmosphere of the dinner, presents and games together.”
Cahall has ‘Christmas on the brain’ and is so proud that his work brings so much joy to others. If you would like to see the house yourself, head to Colehill off Newtowncunningham Main Street. The McGee’s house is on the left hand side going out of Newtowncunningham towards Derry.
