The Mica Action Group has vowed to keep their campaign at ‘business as usual’ in their fight for 100% redress for homeowners.
A week on from the announcement of the new Mica Scheme, the Mica Action Group is focusing on getting the sliding scale abolised.
Speaking to homeowners last night, Michael Doherty, PRO of MAG, said the sliding scale was a problem that everyone had an issue with, regardless of the size of their homes.
Under the new scheme, the average homeowner with a 2,400 sq ft property will have to find €65,000 to rebuild their home.
Mr Doherty said the sliding scale was never on the table during working group talks, despite reports.
“Why would we look for something that was going to cost us money in the long run?,” he said.
The group is now focusing on the Housing Minister’s power in finalising the details of the scheme. It emerged this week that Minister Darragh O’Brien will be setting the cost per square foot of rebuilding a home, in consultation with the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland.
The Mica Action Group has scheduled a meeting with the CEO of the SCSI this week to present the homeowners’ position. The average cost of a rebuild and the intricacies of Mica-affected homes vs ordinary greenfield sites will be discussed with the SCSI with the aim of ensuring they are best-informed for consultations.
Mr Doherty said homeowners are seeking more answers on ‘vague’ responses to issues with the new Mica scheme, including rent alloawance and storage, upfront costs and emergency works.
More structured meetings will be arranged to find clarity on all matters, he said.
