A Donegal-based animal charity has been forced to refuse taking in any more dogs due to a lack of capacity.
Animals In Need in Donegal Town is a voluntary charity that helps homeless or stray dogs and cats. There is no centre, so the animals are all fostered into volunteers’ homes until permanent homes can be found.
But volunteers are in such a dire situation this winter that they have revealed they need to close their doors to any new admissions.
Up until a few weeks ago, there were only two people fostering for Animals in Need.
The team said: “There are so many dogs coming in at the moment we are lying awake at night dreading sunrise because that means we have to try and magic up a foster space for the dogs due to come in that coming day.
“The stress is taking its toll on us all so for the good of our dog volunteers and the dogs we have closed our doors until after Christmas.”
The charity places a priority on rescuing dogs on death row in the local pound. Rescue centres across Donegal are full to capacity, they said, and they are appealing to dog lovers to give animals a second chance this Christmas.
“Many of the dogs currently in our care are not rehomable at the moment due to various reasons. If any one is thinking of adding a new friend to their family please contact the dog shelter in Letterkenny 0749125159 there is an increase in dogs being left there and they would all love to have a home for Christmas.”
Animals In Need Donegal is a Registered Charity No. CHY17864. They are on Facebook www.facebook.com/AINDONEGAL and accept donations on their website www.animalsinneeddonegal.com.
