Over the last twenty years, thousands of students have come through the ‘Access Studies programme at LYIT. The majority of these students progressed into third level programmes of study at LYIT and have gone on to achieve great success in their chosen careers.
Aoibheann Sims, 3rd year student in Applied Computing, chose LYIT’s Access Studies programme when her children started national school. She wanted to return-to-education and felt that the ‘Access Studies’ programme was the perfect fit for her, having been out of education for many years. Aoibheann commented, “Having left school many years ago, Access provided me with the opportunity to get back to education. It gave me the knowledge, skills and confidence to return as a degree student to LYIT.”
Craig Taylor, 4th year student in Architectural Technology, returned to education because he wanted to develop a career. He chose ‘Access Studies’ to help him boost his career prospects, he commented, “Doing the access course opened up a pathway for me becoming an honours degree Architectural Technologist and starting a career instead of a job.”
Chelsea Segundo Cassole, 4th year student Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Business with Management, progressed to LYIT’s Access Studies programme having completed the LCA programme at the Loreto Secondary School in Letterkenny. Now a fourth-year student, Chelsea credits the programme for giving her the ‘confidence and skills’ she needed to excel in her degree programme.
Natalia Abelunas, 3rd year student in Graphic & Digital Design, is from Poland and chose Access Studies as a pathway into third level education. Having previously studied her second level education in Poland, Natalia did not meet the entry requirements to join her programme of interest and accessed LYIT through the ‘Access Studies’ programme. Natalia commented, “The Access course opened new opportunities for me and gave me time to decide which course I was interested in doing. I got to improve my presentation and academic writing skills; in addition to that the social aspect of the access course made a big difference when coming back to campus the next year, knowing I will see my friends again.”
