The death has taken place of hugely popular east Donegal man, Joseph (Joe) Carlin, Crossroads, Killygordon.
He passed away peacefully this afternoon, surrounded by his loving family, at Letterkenny University Hospital following a long illness. He was 54 years of age.
A member of a famous sporting family, Joseph was an outstanding Gaelic footballer, soccer player, hurler and athlete.
He played with Red Hughs in their last Senior County Final appearance in 1991, and also managed the team to the Junior County Final in 2017.
As a manager, he was described as a ‘breath of fresh air’ for Donegal club football, lifting the infamous blanket defence and encouraging his young team to play open, attacking football.
On the hurling field, Joseph won several Senior Championships with the local Setanta Club as well impressing with Curragh Athletic on the soccer pitch.
As a high-performing athlete, he competed all over the country with the Finn Valley AC, of which his late father, John, was a founding member.
Joseph was also an exceptionally talented, self-taught, artist and many of his works adorn homes and businesses across Donegal and beyond.
He was greatly admired by his colleagues at Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT), where he worked as a senior computer technician for almost 30 years.
Joseph, however, will be best remembered as a great husband, father and community man.
A gentle and kind soul, he selflessly gave up his time for the local branch of St Vincent de Paul as well as many other worthy causes.
Predeceased by his father, John, he is survived by his wife Andrea, sons James and Stephen and daughter Anna.
He also leaves behind his grieving mother, Eileen, brothers Sean, Eugene, Marty, Declan and sisters Deirdre (Kelly) and Bernie (Frain), nieces, nephews and a large circle of family and friends.
In compliance with current HSE and Government restrictions, the house, funeral and burial will be strictly private to the family only, please.
Funeral leaving his late residence on Tuesday at 1.40pm for Requiem Mass at 2pm, in St. Patrick’s Church Crossroads, Killygordon, with interment afterwards in the adjoining churchyard.
