Rare sighting of Killer Whales captured off Donegal coast

Two famous Killer Whales have been spotted off the coast of Donegal.

A video of Orcas, believed to be the animals known as ‘John Coe’ and ‘Aquarius’ was taken off Tory Island in recent days.

Now the Donegal branch of the Irish Whale and Dolphin group has appealed to anyone who may have footage or pictures of the giant creatures off the Donegal coastline to get in touch.

Sightings of the magnificent animals have been recorded largely along the west coasts of Scotland and Wales and all around Ireland.

The last confirmed sighting of the pair was reported off Skye in the Inner Hebrides in October 2020, whilst in Ireland, John Coe was last seen off the coast of Donegal in August 2020.

The lockdown during the winter months has meant that fewer people than normal were out at sea and so there have been fewer reported sightings.

The whales, which have distinctive black and white markings, can live up to 80 years and can weigh up to six tonnes.

They swim up to 40 miles a day, foraging for food and exercising and can dive between 100 to 500 feet, several times a day, every day.

They’re at the top of the food chain and have very diverse diets, feasting on fish, penguins, and marine mammals such as seals, sea lions using their huge teeth.
