Rescue services and Gardaí around Donegal have joined forces to mark the first ever World Drowning Prevention Day.
Among those highlighting the cause were Gardaí from the Community Policing Unit in Buncrana alongside members of RNLI Lough Swilly yesterday.
With the beautiful weather we are having at the moment, there is nowhere nicer to be than in the water but we all need to be mindful of water safety.
Please remember the following advice:
Never swim alone.
Always swim parallel to the shore.
Never use inflatables.
Always swim in front of the Lifeguard Station.
Check the tides times.
Check the weather.
Speak to the locals if you are not familiar with a particular bathing spot before entering the water.
Remember if you see someone in trouble in or near the water please dial 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard.
“We urge everyone to be aware of their environment, any warning signs and their own abilities around water and if possible wear a buoyancy aid or life jacket. No matter what your ability is, anyone can drown but no one should,” a spokesperson said.
