Another €1,500 has gone towards a local fund set up to repair a damaged footbridge in south west Donegal.
The iconic structure over the Glen River in Carrick suffered significant damage as a result of the extreme rain that accompanied Storm Lorenzo in 2019.
The local community group in Carrick, Coiste Forbartha na Carraige, took to Facebook to pay tribute to two men who cycled all the way to Dublin for the cause.
“Derek and Victor would like to thank everyone for generously sponsoring their cycle to Dublin, they were overwhelmed by the response,” a spokesperson for the group said.
“They would especially like to thank Seamus Gallagher and Nora who supplied the E bikes and who also sponsored them. They are so pleased that the money, which amounted to €1,520, will go towards the much missed and beloved Carrick Footbridge that was destroyed in a huge flood.”
The bridge links the Carrick River Walk to the picnic area and fishing spot at the Salmon Leap.
Back in May, ‘Normal People’ star Paul Mescal also lent a hand to the fundraising efforts.
The heartthrob had just finished filming in the area for A24’s ‘God’s Creatures’ in which he is co-starring with Chernobyl star Emily Watson and Aisling Franciosi from The Fall.
During his stay, he was a regular at the ‘Brew in Thru’ coffee van, which is situated at The Salmon Leap in Teelin. Before he left, he agreed to a request from the van owners to sign a Donegal jersey (and a pair of O’Neill’s shorts!) for a raffle to raise money for repairs to the structure.
