The organiser of a public meeting that took place in Dunfanaghy during the week has described the attendance of motorhome owners as ‘akin to the British colonisation of India.’
Local businesswoman, Ms Anne Sweeney, made the comments following Tuesday night’s outdoor gathering in the village.
“The meeting was oversubscribed by representatives of motorhome organisations venting their frustration at not being loved or appreciated for their wealth and affluence and economic saving of us poor underprivileged souls in Dunfanaghy. It was akin to the British colonisation of India,” she told Donegal Daily.
She called the meeting to discuss the village’s capacity to provide facilities for campervans and other tourists.
The seaside village is experiencing serious pressures on amenities and parking as ‘staycationers’ flock to the area each week.
The meeting comes three weeks after a barrier was erected on Dunfanaghy Pier to manage the influx of campervans in the village during the summer. This has been largely welcomed by the local community.
When the meeting concluded, Ms Sweeney said, the motorhome representatives “retired to the luxury of their glorious facilities in the derelict Carrig Rua car park.”
