THE CCTV system at Letterkenny Garda Station was not properly reconnected after renovation works were carried out, it has emerged.
Development works took place to the reception and public area of the station last year.
However, it seems as if the station’s CCTV was not reinstalled properly at the time.
The news came to light during a case at Letterkenny District Court this week.
Joe Burns (67) of Woodpark, Lismonagan, Letterkenny is charged with using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour at Letterkenny Garda Station on December 30, 2020.
Sergeant Gerard Dalton outlined that when a CCTV operator checked there was ‘absolutely no data on the hard drive’.
“It appears that the CCTV wasn’t up and running again,” Sgt Dalton said.
Mr Frank Dorrian, representing Burns, said the fault lay with ‘whoever ineptly connected the system’.
“It’s the most modern part of the station and, it appears, the only part with no CCTV,” Mr Dorrian said.
“From the very get-go, my client has been saying: ‘This is on camera’.”
Judge Alan Mitchell said: “This should have been checked by someone.”
Judge Mitchell adjourned the case to September 14, 2021.
