The Department of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering at LYIT is delighted to launch the new Level 6 Higher Certificate in Electric Vehicle Technology which will commence this September.
Dr Gertie Taggart, Head of Faculty of Engineering and Technology is delighted to launch this course stating: “This exciting and innovative course will open up opportunities for graduates to pursue careers as EV Design Engineers, Fuel Cell Engineers, EV Powertrain Engineers and EV Systems Engineers to name but a few.”

This course has been designed to allow graduates to work in an industry embarking on the rapid transition to electrified propulsion, namely Electric Vehicle.
A revolutionary phase shift in the Automotive Industry is occurring with manufacturers committed to phasing out fossil fuel based automotive transport in favour of renewable alternatives. The government has set a target to have 936,000 of the cars registered in Ireland electrified by 2030.
Ireland is however somewhat behind in offering much needed training to technicians working in this area and damage to business will ensue if this remains unaddressed. If half of all vehicles made were fully electric, 10 million net jobs would be added globally by 2030, according to the UN and International Labour Organisation. This includes jobs in EV assembly plants, in battery manufacture, and EV maintenance education. Consumers would also save money on maintaining their cars and thus spend more money on more labour-intensive goods and services, the report says. The potential job market for graduates from this course will be significant.
Dr Paddy Hannigan, Acting Head of Department of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering says: “This modern applied Level 6 Higher Certificate in Electric Vehicle Technology is aligned with existing courses in the Department and is an area where the Department plans to further develop course provision.”
This course will set students on a pathway to excel as an automotive technician in the electric vehicle industry. The course content includes modules focused specifically on the technical aspects of the electric vehicle from system operation and safe working to advanced diagnosis. This is further complemented with modules in electrical and mechanical principles to broaden the understanding and ensure that fundamental engineering content remains at the core.
