All children throughout in Donegal are invited to join the Summer Stars reading adventure and to enjoy the fun and pleasure of reading and writing over the summer.
Donegal Library Service will deliver an exciting series of free events during July and August for children to celebrate the national project.
Summer Stars begins on Monday 14th June 2021.
Cathaoirleach Cllr Rena Donaghey commented, “Donegal County Council is delighted to launch this fantastic literacy programme. With fabulous online events and some free goodies I am sure the children will really enjoy taking part in Summer Stars. It is great to see our libraries have started to re-open on a phased basis. The library service offers a wide range of excellent services for everyone in the community.”
By engaging children in literacy activities over the summer, we give them opportunities to build language awareness, deepen vocabulary, and improve reading fluency. Our library service has developed this programme with a focus on finding the right balance between what is safe, what is fun, whilst trying to tie in with the government’s ‘Keep Well’ campaign – keeping active, staying connected, switching off, eating well, and minding your mood.
Summer Stars is non competitive and every child who reads even one book is regarded as having completed the programme – and it’s all completely free!
This year, Summer Stars is also celebrating children’s imaginations by running a short story competition. Instead of providing a story title to entrants, children are asked to use the following opening line: Of all the places in the world, I never thought I would be here…
There are three age categories with great prizes for winners and runners-up. More information is at summerstars@donegalcoco.ie
We have lots of brilliant audiobooks and e-books that can help you escape through the wonderful BorrowBox app. Borrow, read and listen to the Summer Stars collection of children’s e-books and e-audio books using the app. This is free for all members to use and non-members can join online for free at https://www.librariesireland.ie/join-your-library
This year we included two school events to our programme as COVID-19 restrictions are being eased carefully, therefore children may not get the opportunity to go on a school tour so we wanted to bring the excitement, fun and laughter to primary schools around the county.
For 5th and 6th classes, award-winning author Robert Muchamore will talk about why he became a writer, from an ambitious but hopeless teenager, through to the huge success of his CHERUB series and his latest series Robin Hood, and why he choose to re-invent the legend for new generation of readers.
For younger children Joe and Willow from the Big Pants Theatre Company will give traditional tales a whole new twist! It’s storytelling with a dash of PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) education, plus a hint of history… and not a wishy-washy princess in sight. This show supports and celebrates literacy.
Children and families can find out what else Donegal Library Service has planned for Summer Stars by checking out our website www.donegallibrary.ie and by following our Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Réaltaí Samhraidh 2021
Cuirfidh Seirbhísí Leabharlanna Dhún na nGall sraith imeachtaí spreagúil ar fáil i rith mí Iúil agus Lúnasa do pháistí, le ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar Eachtra Léitheoireachta Réaltaí Samhraidh. Cuirfear tús le Realtaí Samhraidh ar an Luain 14 Meitheamh 2021.
Dúirt An Cathaoirleach Rena Donaghey, “Tá luchair ar Comhairle Contae Dhún na nGall an clár litearthachta iontach seo a sheoladh. Le imeachtaí iontach ar line agus earraí saor in aisce, tá mé cinnte go mbainfidh na páistí sult as páirt a ghlacadh i Réaltaí Samhraidh. Nach iontach an rud é ár leabharlanna a fheiceáil tar éis tosú ag athoscailt de réir a chéile. Cuireann an tseirbhís leabharlainne réimse leathan seirbhísí den scoth ar fáil do achan duine sa phobal.”
Trí páistí a chur i mbun gníomhaíochtaí litearthachta i rith an tsamhraidh, tugaimid deiseanna dóibh
feasacht teanga a thógáil, stór focal a dhoimhniú agus líofacht léitheoireachta a fheabhsú. D’fhorbair ár seirbhís leabharlainne an clár seo le fócas ar an gcothromaíocht cheart a fháil idir an rud atá sábháilte, an rud atá lán de spraoi, agus iarracht a dhéanamh ceangal le feachtas ‘Keep Well’ an Rialtais – ag coinneáil gníomhach, ag fanacht ceangailte, ag múchadh, ag ithe go maith agus ag tabhairt aire de do ghiúmar.
Tugtar cuireadh do achan leanbh ar fud na tíre a bheith páirteach agus taitneamh a bhaint as an spraoi agus an pléisiúr a bhaineann le léamh agus scríobh i rith an tsamhraidh. Níl aon ghné iomaíocht ann le Réaltaí an tSamhraidh agus meastar go bhfuil an clár críochnaithe ag leanbh ar bit a léann fiú leabhar amháin – agus tá sé ar fad saor in aisce!
I mbliana, tá Réaltaí Samhraidh ag ceiliúradh samhlaíocht pháistí trí chomórtas gearrscéalta a reáchtáil. In áit scéal a scríobh le teideal áirithe, iarrtar ar pháistí an líne tosaigh seo a leanas a úsáid: As na háiteanna go léir ar an domhan, níor shíl mé riamh go mbeinn anseo… Tá trí chatagóir aoise ann le duaiseanna iontacha do na bhuaiteoirí agus don dara háit. Tá tuilleadh faisnéise ar fáil ar summerstars@donegalcoco.ie
Tá go leor closleabhair agus r-leabhair iontacha ar fáil le chuidiú leat éalú tríd an aip iontach BorrowBox. Ag baint úsáide as an aip, faigh leabhar ar iasacht, léigh agus éist le Bailiúchán Réaltaí an tSamhraidh de ríomhleabhair agus leabhair r-fhuaime do leanaí. Tá sé seo saor in aisce do gach ball agus is féidir le daoine nach baill iad a bheith páirteach ar líne saor in aisce ag https://www.librariesireland.ie/join-your-library
Chuir muid dhá imeacht scoile san áireamh inár gclár i mbliana mar go bhfuil srianta COVID-19 á maolú go cúramach, dá bhrí sin b’fhéidir nach bhfaigheann páistí an deis dul ar thuras scoile i mbliana agus mar sin theastaigh uainn iarracht a dheanámh an spleodar, an spraoi agus an gáire a thabhairt chuig bunscoileannar fud an chontae.
Maidir le ranganna 5 agus 6, labhróidh an t-údar mór le rá Robert Muchamore faoin doigh gur tháinig sé le bheith ina scríbhneoir, ó dhéagóir uaillmhianach ach gan dóchas, go dtí rath ollmhór a shraith CHERUB agus an tsraith is déanaí s’aige Robin Hood, agus cén fáth a roghnaígh sé an finscéal a ath-insint do ghlúin úr léitheoirí.
Do pháistí níos óige tabharfaidh Joe agus Willow ón Big Pants Theatre Company casadh nua ar fad do scéalta traidisiúnta! Is scéalaíocht é le fleasc d’oideachas PSHE (Pearsanta, Sóisialta, Sláinte agus Eacnamaíoch), chomh maith le leid staire… agus níl banphrionsa ar bith lag nó faiteach le feiceáil sa scéal. Tugann an seó seo tacaíocht don litearthacht agus ceiliúrann sé í.
Is féidir le páistí agus teaghlaigh fáil amach caidé eile atá beartaithe ag Seirbhís Leabharlainne Dhún na nGall do Réaltáí Samhraidh ar ár suíomh gréasáin www.donegallibrary.ie agus is féidir leo sinn a leanúint trí ár gcuntais Facebook agus Twitter.
